AB OBJECTIVE: To analyze the seroepidemiologic trends of HIV infection in
current intravenous drug users (IDUs) from Barcelona. METHODS: The study
population was recruited in a detoxification unit from February 1987 to
October 1993. RESULTS: 650 IDUs (535 men, 115 women) consecutively
admitted. 98.5% were heroin users. The mean age was 25.8 years and the
length of addiction was 74.3 months. Prevalence of HIV-Ab (+): 66.3%.
TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. CONCLUSIONS: There is a decreasing
prevalence of HIV infection among current IDUs starting drug treatment.
However, HIV infection is higher in long-term IDUs who began drug use
before the transmission mechanisms were established.
